Please reflect on Theatre Arts II. This must include evidence of learning. Remember to mention class work (warm-ups, activities), new knowledge (what have you learned), and how the new knowledge relates to theatre and your life. ~ Mr. Peterson
As a partcipant in thetre 2 , i as an actor has enjoyed daily warm up activities like the machine where we were able to show our own creativity and display it within a large circle. I also enjoyed the warmup if you love me you will smile because we were able to use the 4 ps as far as projection , pace , punch and posture. we used different gestures to trick the other person and get them to smile. one thing we also did this month was poems with multiple people where it involed expression and tone. As an actor its easy to put things together and act them accordingly . Therefore i learned alot of things as far as using the character tool box .In which you are not being your self but your displaying the personality of another character. The focus is be active and bring your own creativity in after all its all about being confident and being taken serious at the end its what actors do !!. ..... Jasmine Crovador Nkiru !
i truly think i will do well on the monologue due to my constant focus and engagement in class. I believe that i will show g.o.t.e which is goals obstacles, espectations , and tactics to have a strong performance . Thanks to the examples Mr. Peterson has showed us in class. I want to be able to attain my audience but also achieve my exoectation.
Since the last journal entry i have learned the different steps of an auditio, the moods of a character, and analyzing the G.O.T.E of a character. The warm ups help me step out of my shell and learn more things about ny self as an actor. Warm-ups like if you love me, bibbty-bibbty- bop, etc have showedme there are more essential parts of theater and portraying a character. This new knowledge relates to my life because i need to be more confident, and take pride in what im doing. This relates to theater because when you are potryaing a character you have to still be yourself but put it into someone else's shoes.Your personality has to come alive throught a character. In theatre, you dont necessarily have to let go but have some self control which is what the warm ups have taught me.
This month in theater class I've been able to learn how to show emotions through voice and body language. Earlier this month, my team was divided into teams in order to perform a poem of our choice. My group and I decided to deliver a poem about women's strength. While preparing for the presentation, my peers and I learned that different tones of voices can differ the message one is trying to say. For example, a phrase like "I like your sweater," could have different meanings on how you express it through your tone of voice. If you say it in a friendly way, the audience would be able to tell that your character is giving a compliment. However if the phrase is delivered in a sarcastic voice, your character may be portrayed as being jealous. Or even if the phrase was said in a whisper, deep voice the character may be seemed as if they're trying to steal the sweater. So through the rehearsals, my group was able to find the right tone of voice in order to send the correct message that the audience was supposed to receive. Reflecting back in our performance, I will grade my group a 85%. Because even though we used the proper tone, I feel as though energy and body movement was missing. This leads me to my second point. Body language can also determine the type of message one is trying to portray. Today we did a sit-in exercise were had to characterize someone based on the way we sited. Ronald sited in a way that reflected that his character was cool and casual. Even though he did not have a lot of space or props, he was still able to send across a message through his audience about how his character felt. For my monologue, Mom, my character will enter the room slowly and carefully as if to not interrupt someone. Then she will slowly sit on the chair when a serious piece of her speech is being said. Through this the audience will come across to that something imperative is about to be said. Therefore, Theater class this months has helped me explore new techniques that I can use in next week's presentation.
As the weeks go by, I am learning more and doing better. I feel more and more comfortable with being in the ensemble. Especially when we do warm-ups, I enjoy them. I specifically like Machine, Bippity Bippity Bop, Red-Handed, Schmoo, What Are You Doing, and Sitting in a Chair. I was really focused on Sitting in a Chair because it most connects to the monologues coming up. It showed us that even if we're sitting in one spot not doing anything, we still show a lot about our character even if we don't give any description. I, at first, didn't know why we were doing warm-ups. I thought they were for fun. However, now I know they connect to the lesson and especially what's going to happen in the future, monologues, tableau, and more. Overall, I am more comfortable and used to class. I am, for sure, working hard to get better every theatre class.
So far, I have been learning more about what it takes to be an actor with all the activities we do in theatre class. For example, the clapping game was very fun and energetic, and you had to be able make eye contact with the person beside you and be able to keep up in terms of rhythm. Another warm-up that involved saying "I love you..." to get another person to smile was also very fun because you had to use different tactics in order to make the person you were talking to laugh, and when they didn't you had to try again. This warm-up required mainly energy, dialogue, and body language. Also, G.O.T.E. has also helped me with my monologue because it really helps me understand what my character wants and ways to emphasize different parts of the sentence in order to help the audience comprehend more. In addition, G.O.T.E. has helped me understand the tactics I can use to help convey what my character wants such as using different tones or body language. All in all, theatre class, this month, has really helped me understand what it takes to be an actor and the ways to get into your character using G.O.T.E.
While in theatre, we do multiple different warm ups that coordinate with multiple performances or activities we do in class. One warm up we did in class was that we had to act with some type of action and apply it to a situation. This relates to our monolouge's because during our monlogue we have to apply an emotion to it make it seem real. We also have to use hand gestures in order to make the monlouge seem real. We also learned about something called G.O.T.E. The G stands for goals, O stands for obstacles, T stands for tactics and E stands for expectations. Our characters have all of these components that make up the characters story. These are the multiple things I learned in theatre class.
For theatre class this week, our class has been practicing our monologue for our end of the quarter I.A. grade. So far we had to choose from a packet full of monologues and discover our character's G.O.T.E. During class I learned G.O.T.E stands for goal, obstacle, tactics, and expectation. A goal is what the character wants and an expectation is what the character expects. An obstacle is what stops the character's goal and a tactic is the strategy to get what you want. My character, Joey in the monologue I will perform, is dealing with the loss of his girlfriend and I used G.O.T.E to help me portray my character's emotions. During theatre class, we were taught how to audition for a role and prepare your character before you act him or her out. Auditioning is apart of the acting experience that allows you to explore the character, search for specifics, and interact with other performers. During an audition the actor must prepare a cold reading. The steps to a cold reading include being confident, breaking down the scene, finding out what the character wants in the scene, making the choice of the characters actions, taking your time, interacting with partners, perseverance, memorizing the next line, and using your thumb to move down the script. My favorite part of theatre class as a whole was playing pass the clap since it takes a lot of eye contact, focus, accuracy, and the will power to be silly.
In theatre class I have learned the importance of G.O.T.E . This skill is important when your trying to figure out what a character really wants to accomplish. As an actor it is important to be able to decode your character in order for to truly commit yourself to the scene. With my monologue I discovered that my character is very sullen. She suffers with thoughts of not being having her friend around any more. With this type of emotion in my monologue i have to truly commit myself to getting inside her mind. Because of G.O.T.E I am able to do just that and give a compelling performance.
I am truly enjoying theater class. It has called me to think about life differently. My peers are like my co stars in my teachers are my director. The warm ups are very fun. They teach us strong voice and active listening as well as eye contact. Zip Zap Zop is a great example. You have to pay attention to the others are around you in order to play the game. This also appears in reality. The warm ups teach us a life skills. Without these skills you would make it nowhere in life. We have recently learned about G.O.T.E which helps us to better understand our characters. While in theater I have learned to come out of my shell and be myself. I have never thought of myself as being an actress. Taking theater class has caused me to do so.
Theatre class has become more fun and interesting. So have the warm ups. My favorite two so far are, "Pass the Clap" and "If You Love Me". Both are interesting because they both requires you to be focused AND energized. I am also really looking forward to presenting my monoluge. Although I can't really relate to my character on a level as serious as hers, I look forward to trying to take past experiences and apply that emotion to my presentation. I really look forward to doings things like this in the future because I will be able to express my self in many different ways. Doing so will help me to advance my acting skills as the year progresses.
As a participant and student in Theatre 2 i feel confident. I feel as though im improving in so many areas of my life i didnt even know theatre could affect. For example im becoming more creative I have more of an imagination because of theatre. Also to add on some things in theatre i still dont understand. I dont understand why or how certain warm up activities can help us in theatre. Althpouigh thats one thing im perplexed about there are also things i enjoy. For instance, if you love me, wont you just smile is one of my all time favorite warm-ups. And so is "Bibbit bibbity bop" its an activty where we have to think fast and learn how to compose ourselves. We also have to learn how to focus and do things without making other students get distracted and lose thought. This connects to acting because when you arw on astage with other actors and you do something to distract them they have to focus or gret distracted. If multiple people on stage become distracted the play will not go well, and the director wont allow you to be in any more plays. With all that beuing said i have learned alot in the past few monts of theatre class.,
Recently in theater I have learned about GOTE, auditioning, and monologues. GOTE helps break down a charater's mission. Goal, Obstacles,Tactics, and Expectations help an actor prepare for auditioning. Sometimes an actor may need to audition a monolgue of the play as an independent character on stage. As you can see each skill we learn in this class helps build another which leads to a better performance. As actors we must be able to conform to our characters' position and make the story believable. When we did the GOTE for Jack in Titanic everyone was able to realize how he got into charater using body movements, language, the 4 p's etc. Obviously proving my point of each acting skill helping benefit the other. As for the monologues I have realized the deeper I use GOTE the more I get into my character and I am able to be since about my role rather than just playing the part. Overall I am excited to continue theatre class this year and cannot wait to actually have a performance to use what what we have learned in class.
These pass few theatre class have been very intriguing for me. We have been practicing monologues recently and learning about G.O.T.E. This stands for goals, obstacles, tactics, and expectation. This method helps us as actors eloquently portray out character in the way it needs to be. A little bit about our warm-ups. My favorite warm-up so far would have to be Bibbity-Bibbity-Bop. In this warm-up each person is to say bop before the person who said bibbity. Also, the responding person can get weird movements such as Charles's Angles or an Elephant. This requires the person to move quickly and think on their feet. A reflection I want to make is when my group had to preform a poem. I would grade us between an 80% and and 85%. I say this because we did well overall but we could have done a lot better . Our performance seemed rushed and had little to few gestures. Bedsides that, theatre class has been a great success in improving my acting skills and I look forward to the future activities.
khadijah abdullah courage during this month's classes, i learned more about performance skills(cold readings), acting verbs, and more commiunication warm-ups. One of the first warm ups we did was called pass the clap. This warm up included you making eye contact with someone and passing their clap of energy to you. The excercise help the students with their urgency and interaction skills. This warm up connects to my life because i need speed and communication to get my tasks done faster. Following that activity we learned about audition and cold readings. In this lesson, we found that the audition of an actor consists of performances with others to get a spot in a play or show. The 9 steps of cold reading deal with confidence, memorization, and speed. When you a cold reading, you have to be able to relax and know that you'll do fine. At the end of the month we closed with a mini lesson on how to use acting verbs. Acting verbs are verbs that can be used in a scene but with several different meanings. Some examples of this verbs are: awaken, cheer up, convice, etc. Then right now we are working on our monologue for next week
Because of theater class I have learned how to channel my energy . I am always participating in class and I have fun with the different scenarios given to us. When we did park bench I really enjoyed this game because I'm usually an excited individual , but I had to be stubborn in this scenario. All the different theater exercises have helped me to prepare for my monologue. I am excited about being able to use a prop and I know what I have to do to make my character believable. I have learned the importance of memorization and how much better ones scene will be when they have their performance memorized. It looks more natural and it seems , realer .
Because of theater class, I've learned that one's facial expressions can tell an audience a lot about a character. This is shown through the theatre warm-up with the chair. In this activity, a person sits in a chair and poses. The class is then supposed to guess the circumstances that the character is in while he/she doesn't use words. This teaches us that words don't always have to be used in order for one to be expressive. We also learned how emotion and props also assists the audience in describing a character. The use of props, as shown in the youtube clips, can help our monologues when we are talking to the audience. Also, the use of GOTE can help us find the identity and purpose for our monologues through goals, obstacles, tactics and expectations.
This month in theater class has had it's benefits and it's drawbacks. It has been really difficult trying to memorize my monologue even though I have made a tremondous amount of progress. The benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. I have been able to realize how I can achieve my goal in the sense of a character. I know that I have to use my tactics to achieve my goal. The process of G.O.T.E is really effetive and helps me actually get into character. The warm up that actually got my class interested was Word Tennis. It helped all of us to be able to think on our feet and how to react with what the other character said. The other warm up that my class really enjoyed was Bibbity Bibbity Bop. It got our energy up and my class was able to react quickly to the moves made by Mr.Peterson.The monologue performance is quickly approaching. It has been a stressful experience trying to memorize it and get into character. It will be a challenge the day that we perform monologues because I will be nervous. I will have great determination and muster the courage to perform a great monologue. Unit 1 and Unit 2 in Theater in class has been very successful between improvisation and monologues.
As time goes by in theatre class I learn more about myself and how to become an actor. As I spend more time in class I come more out of my shell. For example, when we have partners and have to act in front of the class I put my all into the performance and learn to be an actor. By participating in warm-ups, I learn how to stay in character and how to act with a purpose. Today in theatre class we had a warm- up called Sitting in the Chair. This allowed me to know how my character in my monologue is suppose to act and how she is as a person. As I spend more time in class I hope to become better as an actor and learn more about its purpose in life.
In these fast few weeks of theatre class I have learned a lot about getting into character. My favorite warm up activity has been “sit in the chair.” I really liked this activity because it allowed me improvise. I came up with my idea as I was doing it, I didn’t know who I wanted to impersonate, but the idea of being spontaneous, I find interesting. Another activity I liked was Count to 20. I liked this activity because it really brought us together as a group. We normally are not all on the same page for several different reasons, but this activity forced us to make eye contact. Though we did not get to 20, we still in my opinion were successful because we learned a lot about each other in this warm up. I am very excited about our monologues because I get the opportunity to get out of character a lot. My character Kathleen is in a tough situation with her mother dying, in which I hope I do not face anytime soon. This was very hard for me to think about at first, but theatre is all about taking risks.
throughout the whole theatre class, i auctually stated to really enjoy it. the Machiene game, and Bibbity bibbity bop. It made me loosen up when it came to leting my gaurd down and thinking outside of the box and stepping out of my comfort zone.Because of Theare, I've realized that its more to just acting and getting into another character, its about facial expressions , staying into character, and using G.O.T.E inorder to get the goal of your main character. Right now we're doing Momolouges, and I feel like i would do a pretty good job on mine because i can relate to it. However, with watching the videos in class, it evident that its more than just learnig a few lines. it's the emotion built behind it and how you're going to make it seem like there's really another person in the scene with you. With that, I realize that it will take more than to just do it. you have to know everything about your monolouge. what you did before , what are you about to do , and what you want. Therefore, I know that I have to really work hard with my partner when it comes to practicing and use all the tactics that makes a great actor.
During this month's class I've learned things such as cold reading as well as G.O.T.E and challenges such as memorizing poetry with a group. My favorite activity so far was "Machine" because it was very interesting what melody a group of people can create just by building off one another. The group project was not very hard but there was room for improvement from my group. We all knew our lines but we didn't pratice with one another until the day of which is beyond diffrent than bring by one's self. In the future I plan to take more reponsibility and make sure that my group pratices together more often. Overall this month of theatre has opened me up to new expirences and I look forward to this upcoming month.
So far this year in theatre class, I have enjoyed studying the world of theatre. I am able to study the body language and emotions of a character based on the goals and obstacles of the character. Over the course, I am able to recognize actors's tools and how they are needed in all acting activities. I am constantly trying to improve my communication during class. I am improving my confidence and I want to show this in my monologue performance. My partner and I have focused on the goals and obstacles of the character. I look forward to seeing how my ideas come together in my next dress reheasals. I look forward to my constant improvements in theatre class as it continues.
During the month of October i have learned that i can connect to theater more than I thought. I have become more open minded about your class and I enjoy it. My favorite part of class is when we do the activity after our do-now. What I learned is that i need to work on my memorization of poems and monologues because when my group and I preformed our poem I read straight from the sheet I wrote my lines on. For my monologue I would really like to know everything by heart and do well so I can say I have improved in the pass few weeks of class. I look forward to all the other fun activities theater class has to offer.
Theatre class has changed over these few weeks in order to improve our theatre skills and our knowledge of the art of an actor. I now know that when auditioning for a role, you have to use the nine rules of cold reading. If the director feels that you performed well with the lines you were assigned, he/she will call you back and tell you if you earned a part in the play. This is called a callback. An actor can get information about an audition from a bulletin board, backstage, or from online. This will help the actor prepare for their audition in the future. My favorite cold reading rule is putting your thumb on the next line because I am good at that so that i know where I am in the scene/monologue. These skills are helping me to prepare for my monologue next week.
Theater class has taught me a lot over the past few weeks. I learned a new way of thinking when I act. Now, when I act I keep the character's goal in mind. Having the goal in my head allows me to think of how I can succeed with this goal. G.O.T.E allows me to stay focused on the purpose of my character and not do unnecessary actions. Doing the poem performance taught me a few lessons as well. The first lesson it taught me was to rehearse with your group. When one does not rehearse with their ensemble, there is not an understanding of what needs to occur during the performance. Rehearsing also allows you to become creative and add to the scene. When my group rehearsed, we thought of how we were going to move and which members were going to say certain lines. This rehearsal made our performance more attractive to the audience because we did actions that were unique to the poem we presented. Without practicing, the performance would have been banal. Another important aspect of performing is having your script memorized because if you don’t have your lines memorized, that will take away the effect of your performance. The audience cannot connect with the actor if the actor is actually reading. It is also difficult to find the G.O.T.E. while you are reading and performing at the same time. You will not portray the character to the best of your ability. The warm ups have taught me that we have to work together because many of our warm ups have to do with eye contact and interacting between two people. If the two actors are not on the same page, then the activity will not be very successful.
In theater class we've been learning the importance of G.O.T.E.for actors. Every actor/actress has a goal when they get on stage to perform. Actors have to be prepared for anything that is being thrown their way when performing. Actors have to learn to think like the character they are portraying. They have to think to themselves, "what would the character I'm portraying do if this obstacle got in their way?" Actors have to be quick on their feet at all times especially when performing, which is where improvisation comes into play. When obstacles are thrown an actor's way, they have to have tactics to overcome those obstacles. Actors must do whatever they can to succeed in achieving their goal while staying in character. Actors must also be expecting to achieve their goal. Having the mindset that you will achieve your goal will make achieving your goal even more possible. G.O.T.E makes me view situations differently. When I have conversations with people I know what my goal is and I look forward to achieving that goal. Acting has also helped me control my facial expressions more, which also goes back into tactics for obstacles that come my way in life. -Assata Hogans Nkiru
So far up to this week, in theatre class we have been learning about the qualities that help an actor fit into a character. We studied how actors utilize G.O.T.E. An actor must always figure out what the goal of the character is. They also need to know the obstacle that is preventing their character from reaching their goal. I feel that this tactic will be very useful for my upcoming monologue. This can help me connect emotionally with my character. Which is also good practice for future plays that will occur in theatre class. This week my partner and I have been practicing our monologues and trying to figure out the props that we will use. I feel great about this monologue and think that I will to a great job when it is time to perform. -Kwasi Moses Courage
In theater class we have improved as actors over the short time we have had classes. We have become more confident as actors through the warm-ups. The warm-ups have made us more comfortable with people and acting in general. We have also been learning about G.O.T.E. This strategy has helped me, personally, understand acting better and the dialogue itself. I am able to see different scenes differently. Overall, theater so far has been a success in building me as an actor.

ReplyDeleteI am truly enjoying theater class.
ReplyDeleteTheatre class has become more fun and interesting.
ReplyDeleteAs a participant and student in Theatre 2 i feel confident. With all that beuing said i have learned alot in the past few monts of theatre class.,
ReplyDeleteRecently in theater I have learned about GOTE, auditioning, and monologues.
ReplyDeleteThese pass few theatre class have been very intriguing for me.

ReplyDeleteduring this month's classes, i learned more about performance skills(cold readings), acting verbs, and more commiunication warm-ups.
ReplyDeleteBecause of theater class, I've learned that one's facial expressions can tell an audience a lot about a character.
ReplyDeleteThis month in theater class has had it's benefits and it's drawbacks.
ReplyDeleteAs time goes by in theatre class I learn more about myself and how to become an actor.

ReplyDeleteDuring this month's class I've learned things such as cold reading as well as G.O.T.E and challenges such as memorizing poetry with a group.
ReplyDeleteSo far this year in theatre class, I have enjoyed studying the world of theatre.
ReplyDeleteDuring the month of October i have learned that i can connect to theater more than I thought.
ReplyDeleteTheatre class has changed over these few weeks in order to improve our theatre skills and our knowledge of the art of an actor.
ReplyDeleteTheater class has taught me a lot over the past few weeks.
ReplyDeleteIn theater class we've been learning the importance of G.O.T.E.for actors.
