June Journal - DUE June 13 @ 9pm

Hi everyone! So here we are. The FINAL journal! You have given me so much this year as my students and I am proud of you. This has been a particularly interesting year with all of you. Truly! From poems and monologues to the Directing Project, Theatre History, and Playwriting - we have learned and grown together.

Here are the questions I want you to address in your final journal. Please post your THOROUGH JOURNAL (i.e. long) entry here!

1. What do you feel you have learned in this class?

2. How do you feel you have grown as a result of this class?

3. What is your most memorable moment of learning in class?

4. What would you say was an "a-ha" moment from class?

5. How has this class affected the way you see the world outside the doors of NSA?

6. What was you least favorite part of class?

7. What would you suggest would be a unit to extend/shorten/elaborate for next years class?

8. What is the difference between how you viewed this class when you first started in September versus how you feel about it now?

9. Make any other comments you'd like about your learning and feelings towards Theatre Arts II.

This is your last journal grade for the year. Be thorough and answer each question is depth. It will be due on June 13th. It is a PASS/FAIL grade meaning, if you complete the full journal answering all questions, you get 100%, if you don't complete them all or don't do it, you get 0%.

Thank you for such a great year! You have all taught me so much and I hope you feel that you have learned a great deal as well! Enjoy your summer!

  1. I feel like this year I learned a lot about myself through Theatre class. I have found myself in non-familiar places that have helped me grown a lot as an actor. I have learned to always give your front to the audience, something I really didn’t pay much attention to at first. I have also learned that your body language tells a lot about your character. Someone who’s sad will have a hunched back position with a frown on their face while a happy person would be standing up straight with a constant moving body. The most memorable moment I can think of is the first true monologue that I delivered in class. At first it took me a lot of time to learn my lines and portray my emotions through my voice, tone, and body language. This was such an amazing moment because I realized that I am actually a good actor. Moving on, my a-ha moment in class would be when the presentations of theatre history were taking place. This was an a-ha moment because it helped me realize that I did not know the most important key points about the history of theatre. Those presentations were an awakening call for me to start studying the history since it would not be such an easy thing to memorize in a day. Furthermore, theatre has helped me view the world differently, a little to be honest. I do not see a greater difference outside the NSA doors because of theatre. However, theatre has helped me see the world of theatre differently. Before I used to think that theatre was easy and you just go up on stage and perform. But I realized that that’s not the case. Theatre is like a gym to me, I have to exercise my skills in theatre and allow them to grow. The more I practiced a skill, the better I got. Theatre is no easy job, due to that a lot of hard work, studying, memorizing, and dedication it takes to make a great play. Moving on, my least favorite part of class was whenever my class wasn’t “on point.” The constant talking and disrespectfulness held us back as a team. If we all did our part to stay quiet and pay attention, the class would’ve flowed fluently. Next, one topic that would be helpful to extended for next year would be the time spent on the scenes. I think one more project on making a scene and performing it would be great for us students to develop our work as a playwright and an actor all in one. That would be fun but also challenging! One thing that I have changed about my view about theatre is that it is not an easy class. Yes, it is fun! However, dedication is something that had to be put into that class in order to pass. I provided much of my dedication to this class, especially on the projects, because that is the key to be successful. Finally, I would like to say that I did enjoy theatre this year due to it helped me take out a lot of stress and helped me take a mental break from other challenging classes. Thank you!

  2. In theatre, I feel like I've learned alot about myself and how it originated. Through this class, I learned about new ways to interact with others, even if it's not verbally but physically. I've grown so much in the sense that I'm a playwright and I was able to see what I wrote acted out. I feel as though theatre has helped me learn alot about myself and how I like to "act" or just what I feel about certain things. I learned how to express myself more. The most memorable experience in class was when we all acted as stock characters, like the Inamoratos or the Pantelone. I think an "a-ha" moment from class was probably the videos we all watched on how the stock characters acted. I think that gave us an idea of how theatre was during the French Renaissance. I'm not really sure on how theatre has affected the way I see the world outside of school. I don't really have an opinion on what goes on out there. My least favorite part of class was how some students actually acted in the class. Some days they would be rude and not pay attention and other days they would be very enthusiastic and have alot of alacrity. I'm not really sure about what units that should be extended or shortened because we learned so much and I'm not saying that's a bad thing but I just don't really have an opinion in it. In the beginning of September, I felt as though theatre wasn't important and it was a waste of time but now I see that it's not here to anger me or waste my time, it's here to actually help me and improve the way I interact with others. I also wanted to say thank you for all that you have done for me, it really helped me get to where I am today.

  3. I feel that I have learned that theatre isn't necessarily just acting. There is a history behind everything we do in class, meaning that everything has its special meaning and contribution to theatre. I also feel that I have learned more about myself seeing that I was able to remember some of the material more than others. I think it had to do with the material I was partically interested in and the material I wasn't. I feel that I really haven't grown because I still feel the same way about theatre. I don't like theatre at all as well as speaking in front of people. I also don't like for thing that I have written to be read in front of people. I just don't like contributing especially if I have to second guess myself about it. I don't really have a memorable moment of learning in class because I have very bad memory. That's why it's harder for me to remember things from the previous quarters. I haven't really had a "a-ha" moment in class because I would just learn the information that was taught to me and move on with my life. This class didn't change my perception on the world because I still feel that the world is a competitive place where only the strong survive. Then there are those people who try to cheat to get ahead in the competiton and it just puts them further back. I didn't have a least favorite part of class because I didn't like the class in general. Theatre isn't my thing so I didn't really give it a chance. I felt that all the units were long enough. I just felt that towards the end of each quarter we should have tried to review more before the IA. Even though we did have study sessions in class, I felt that they weren't productive enough and as a result people didn't remember the material. Throughout this year, my view on this class has remained the same. I don't like theatre. I just feel that it's not something that I would ever try to persue later on in life. This year has been a big challenge for me because of how I feel about theatre. I think that if my attitude change, then I would have done better.

  4. After a year of theater class,I feel as though theatre was just about learning how to act, memorize lines, and/or direct scenes, but its much more than that. It dates back to the 18 century with the italian renaissance with commedia del arte and the english renaissance.I learned alot about the ancient history of theatre of how it got started and how it evolves into today.
I have grown through out this year because I have became more open to new ideas especially theatre because it made me more aware of the things around me. theatre is a foundation to alot of the things today that many people take for granted.
the most memorable moment in class was the acting and directing scenes because you saw everyone come out of their shell. It was interesting to see everyone act in a scene with a partner and put all the elements we learned into a scene. Also it was fun to direct and act in a short scene because it showed what actual actors and directors have to go through in order to put together an entire play.
An a-ha moment from class would be the warm ups because the interesting ones would get the class waken up especially when you had theatre in the morning;it was an eye-opener especially warm ups like bibity bibity bop, or zip zap zop. Everyone would participate and it would get everyone energized.
theatre has helped me see the world outside of NSA differently because it made me appreciate the things we watch on tv and the things we encounter today because many theatre playwrights such as shakespeare, his works still exist today and hia moat famous play Hamlet was turned into a childrens disney movie. So theatre has been evolved into something today that everyone can appreciate.
the least favorite part of class was the lectures from when we were learning about the ancient theatres like rome and greece because they were never interesting for me and it eventually got confusing.
It would be better to elaborate on the ancient theater historieslike rome and greece because we learned them at the same time which made them confusing so seperating them would have made it understandable. Honestly i viewed theatre in the beginning as a waste of time because i didnt really see the importance of it. I continued to ask how is theatre going to help me in my futre career or my future at all. But now I see that theatre is important in my futre because it correlates with soo much that I never really understood. Also, I have learned that I really like theatre and its something that intrests me and im excited to take acting and directing next year

  5. In this class I have learned that Theater class maybe hard in a way, but it is for sure possible. I think this class has help me grow as a person. I think that this class has expanded my horizon and I have learned things in this class that will at some point in my life be essential to my life. A memorable moment in courage would have to be when we played the game when one classmate would turn around and we would all have to hurry up and get as close as we could to her with out her seeing us move when they turned back around. This game was really a fend for yourself type of game and it was interesting to see what people would do in order to win the game, it was HILARIOUS! An a-ha moment would have to be quarter 3 when we learned about the Comedia D'el Arte era, only because that era was very funny and interesting. It was interesting to what people thought was funny during that time period. My least favorite part of the class this year would of had to be the directing project, only because the time was way bad. At that time our personal projects in college readiness had just began to thrive. That was the time where things began to be due and massive research needed to happen. The directing project was fun but, it was very fun, but it was just wrong as far as timing. Somethings for next year is I think that the Theater history unit should be the very first unit, only because it is very content heavy and when we start school we start school expecting alot of work and content and information about the basics of the class that we are taking; therefore it wont be that hard to fully process the information like it was for the sophomores this year during quarter 3. However over all I enjoyed Theater this year. In the beginning of the year I thought new teacher and a new class that I had never took before, and that class happened to be theater, therefore I thought I was going to be able to slack off and just use this class as a relax time class. However doing the musical and learning more about it my IGNORANT thoughts and views on theater quickly changed. I have gained a newly founded respect for theater and i cannot wait until next year!

  6. Throughout the 10 months of school, I have learned in theatre class how to be a better performer. in this year, we have learned a lot dealing with the tools of the actor and the dramatic techniques that have helped me to be a better actor in school and learn a lot about what the actors in the shows and the movies do to prepare for big projects. I think I have grown in terms of my acting skills. At the beginning of the year, I wasn't so forward with performing in front of a group. But, as the year went along I started to develop more and more acting capability. Activities like the monologues and scenes helped me a lot with practice being on stage. This helped me to prepare myself for Ms. lisboa's class because I know there are more performances to come. The staged readings for me was the most memorable moment because it was fun to hear everyone's play to see their creativity levels. Also, the readings helped me to analyze me own play and improve myself as a playwright. One "a-ha" moment was when learning the dramatic elements (i.e. plot, characters, sound, etc.)because it kind of showed the "behind the scenes" information about how the actors work when learning their lines and it made me really think about their different techniques of acting. This class effected me in the outside world because whenever i'm looking at a movie, I always look to see what type of emotion they're using or acting technique, so it made me look at outside school productions a whole lot differently. My least favorite part of this year's class was the theatre history unit because when I had to match the information and the time period I would get confused. Also, I know this unit was important, I didn't find it interesting. when I first walked into this class, I thought that it was unnecessary to take and it was a waste of time because I didn't want to learn about it. However, now I feel like this class was very important because it was a skill that we need to use in some type of way in the future.

  7. 1. I feel as though I've successfully learned how to get in and out of character. Before coming into theatre I didn't really find acting to be interesting. Bit , it was fun being able to place myself in different scenarios and become someone different . I've also learned how to properly write a play. Like , my draft wasn't that good but I think my final draft was better. I know there are minor things to fix , but realizing those mistakes will help to make my future pieces of writing better.
    2. As an result of this class I feel like my confidence has been boosted. I'm not the best public speaker , but I do feel as though I've gotten better at speaking in front of people. I've also gotten better at team work considering that I had to work with other people when we did our group scenes and had to create tableus.
    3. My most memorable moment is doing the frozen images. It was fun working with others to make a image with our bodies.
    4. An "a-ha" moment for me would be after hearing ,y play read aloud. After the ending , I realized that it was a not confusing and I realize that I could've ended it much better.
    5. I think that because of theater I have become more accepting of a lot of things. Like , everyone thinks differently and everyone finds interest in different things. After hearing the plays , I've come to a conclusion that people find different things to be entertaining.
    6. My least favorite part was the student re-teach because not everyone took it seriously and we didn't really learn much.
    7. The plays could be extended that way they have more time to read it. And also , it'd be nice to actually have a reading of the play with actual props and costumes in front of the class , similar ton what we did for the scenes.
    8. In September , I thought that theater was useless and I wouldn't really learn anything. Bit now , I'm just really grateful for this class. It was so fun and different .

    1. Jazmyn! Thank you for your post. #9 question seems to be not answered. Was that a mistake? Remember- this journal is pass/fail. You must answer all questions - as stated above. Cheers,

Starting this year for the first time have brought numerous suprises. I have become more overall related and connected to the theatre world. I feel that this year i learned more about being in the director and playwright shoes. I learned that the director incorporate the VIZ which is the visual.I also learned that in order for the director to be creative when demonstrating a specific story they are helped with the dramatic metaphor. I also learned that for playwright the stage directions tend to be very difficult because its being the action expressed rather than the words themselves. I feel have grown as far as over looking the main principles outlined in theatre. Before , I rushed and never considered thinking out the box or even using the actor's tool box.Overall, what we learned at the beginning of the year served us purpose nearing quarter 3 . My most memorable moment was when we were in small groups of 3 and 4 and did a poem picked by us . This was when we finally took on the responsibility of collaborating and working in small groups. An aha moment is when we began doing monologues because that took us out comfort zone and for once made us act and narrate a story by ourselves . Theatre history is a unit that should be extended , because i feel that it was rushed and that today Iam still confused about the difference between ancient rome and ancient greece. At beginning of year , i was very much shy and had little self esteem. However , now I have a great deal of audacity and creativity .I hope the freshmans don't shy away from their spark in theatre , they must be brave and be willing to take on the stance as excelling students. Also some should consider joining the play ,because afterall that led to a new and great experience.
    Love : Jasmine

  9. 1.I feel like I have learned a lot more about theatre history. Throughout this year, I have learned that in order to act you have to begin with the basics of storytelling and that has began my basis to becoming a better actress.
    2. I feel that I have learned that I can be an aspiring actress and be more in touch with my acting techniques. Also, I feel like I have learned to write my very own play and do more showing not telling.
    3. My most memorable experience was quarter two when we did our acting scenes. I felt as though this was very interesting and life changing because I began to intensify my working abilities with others and my memorization of important lines.
    4. I'm not sure what my a-ha moment could be but I guess it could surround the fact that I might pursue acting because of all the warm ups. The warm ups we go keep me engaged and I look forward to doing them. Doing warm ups help keep me up and have some fun during class.
    5. For me, I see the outside world as a stage. Without ART , the eARTh would be just eh. This was introduced to be during Sweeney Todd and it has really opened my eyes to the world.
    6. Fortunately, I don't believe I had and least favorite parts of theatre class.
    7. In order to help the students, I think that separating the ancient Greek and Roman ideas will help incoming sophomores to comprehend and learn more about the history.
    8. When I first got to theatre I thought I was going to be a waste. Now I see that it has been very beneficial especially to helping me with being in the play. Without theatre, I don't think I would have tried out or even kept going on with the play.
    9. In theatre II, I think my learning has been expanded to the point where I know more than I did in August. This has made me a better person intellectually and also with my acting skills. I feel like the best way for incoming sophomores to enjoy it is to make the best of the class and just try everything. I enjoyed theatre class and I can't wait for what is in store for me next year!!

  10. After a year of haveing theatre class, i feel as though i have learnded a lot on new information and knowledge about the history of theatre, and theatre in general. During the beginning of the year, i was not aware of anything about theatre, but as the year went on and class started to pick up, i started to understand a lot more content that we were being taught. I feel that as a result of this class, i have grown a lot because i have become a better student. I am more open to different things now, and i pit more effort into everything that i do as a student. Even though it took me a while to realize, i now know that what i put in is what i am going to get out. So if i put 100% into what i'm doing as a theatre student, i am going to get 100% out of what i'm doing. I think the most memorable thing i learned about during class was the staged redings. This was one of my most favorite things we did in theatre class because i enjoyed hearing my peers play and also enjoyed seeing them being performed by my peers. An "a-ha" moment that occured in class would have to be when we did a staged reading of my play and my peers and i realized the twist that i made in my play. I felt as though it was both an exciting moment and an "a-ha" moment. Theatre class has affected me outside of NSA because, like i mentioned before, i am a lot more open to doing things that i would have never done before. For example, acting was something that i was not interested in before we started theatre class, but now, it is something that i might consider doing with my spare time. My least favorite part about theatre class this year was when we learned about Elizabethian theatre because i did not find it very interesting. It was one the topics that i did not really engage fully with. Two units that should be extended are the Greece vs Rome unit and the unit on staged reading because i found those very interesting and fun to learn about. I know that the students next year will also enjoy these units because they were really interesting and grabbed my attention. The difference between how i view theatre class now that i did when we first started is that i now know that even though it might not be as important that the other classes we have, theatre is a great subject to learn about and can benefit you later in life when new opportunities arise. Overall, i feel as though theatre class this year was a blast and a great first learning experience for me because i am walking away with more knowledge than i had before.

  11. In theater class I have learned how to work together in groups I was forced to be in. I was usually more comfortable with doing things the way I wanted to and by myself without the help from others and in this class I was pushed out of my comfort zone. I have failed with some and passed with others, but at the end of the day I can say that I trust people more with things from having that experience. I am still growing with trying to use theater as a template to help me grow, my attitude is not the best at times and I need to know how to ACT like I am okay with somethings when I have to even if I am not. My most memorable moment of theater class was when Agape did our monologues, they were not good whatsoever, but everyone had a positive attitude about them and tried their best to preform the one line that they knew. An "A-ha" moment that I have had in theater class had to be when I became a director and producer of my own play. I came to appreciate the art of writing your own play and I cared and still do care for my play a lot. I can now see why the audition process is so demanding because I personally would not want a bad actor playing the lead role of my play. My least favorite part of class was the learning part. I enjoyed the warm ups because they were always fun and made me feel more energized and everyone gets along during them. I think everything in theater class is perfectly planned already, so no there are not any changes I would make. In August I viewed this class and just fun and games but now I don't. I actually can see the importance of theater to people now and why it is a pastime that has yet to die down.

  12. In theatre class, I think I learned a lot of things. I learned to become another character and to incidentally accept who I am as a person and also as someone who knows now how to write plays. I think in the beginning, I think I was not accepting the information that I was being given and not really using it for everyday purposes, however, as the year progressed I learned how to transfer my theatre skills and used them for other classes, even though I still have stage fright. As a result of theatre class, I think I've grown in a way that I express my feelings more than usual. Instead of just being nonchalant all the time, I’ve used other emotions that I feel on that day or how the day made me feel as it progressed. I think it also helped me expand my knowledge of theatre because I thought it was just “to be or not to be” acting and just memorizing scripts but it was more than that. Instead of looking at it as a hobby I actually look at it as a career and something that people take really seriously just like how doctors are with their jobs. My most memorable moment of learning in class was actually recent, not saying that I don’t have other memorable moments, it’s that this one is more recent. It was when you challenged my group when we said that we were going to make a jeopardy game. I think that made me more serious about the class and everything else in life. Also, It was just a few days ago when you said,” I apologize for my casual nature” , although I think that was sarcasm, it made me feel liberated in a way because it told be in a way that everyone’s casual nature Is different and that they should embrace it in a way. The a-ha moment for me was finally understanding the difference in stage between the Romans and Greeks. It was something that I struggled with and the fact that I got it really made me think like ohh! I finally got it after all this time. This class has affected how I see the world because now I see everything as either a presentation or a place where I have to be a different person because you have different selves when you’re in different surroundings. I see the world as different backgrounds and different settings. I think my least favorite class was the tension that was always built within the class and also sometime group work because sometime you weren’t pared with people who you actually get along with so if you needed help it would be out of luck until you talked to you because either the person you were working with didn’t know or they weren’t willing to help you. I think that you should expand the French neoclassical era and when talking about Rome and Greek and separating them so it would not be as confusing. At first I was like ok Easy A I’ll have a 3.5 with the help of this class, there’s barely any work. But now I’m like Theatre is a big deal and I really have to work. It’s not really something you can brush off because those 0’s really add up. Also that there are alot of group activity and everyone depends on everyone. Theatre class was great. I just wish I paid more attention and developed a better relationship with for me to understand theatre more.

  14. This year in tenth grade theatre I've learned alot about the behind the scenes of theatre. I never knew or considered the stage positions that actors thought about. I also never knew what went in to a play, the characters, or the actors. Everything was deeper than I thought. I learned that in one character there were interactions considered, age, and personality. For a playwright they had to create all these in their play. An memorable moment in class was the time for stage readings when some people's plays were something you wouldn't have expected. These readings were also memorable since you realized how good or bad you could have done in something. I haven't really changed because of this class I have only realized somethings about myself. Any ah ha moments would have been when I realized how I prefer to watch plays instead of writing them. I learned I don't like the guidelines and additional pieces I only enjoy creating a story. My least favorite part of class was college lectures, since we were in theatre I thought we should add more activities or videos instead. Units with lectures should be cut down. In September I don't remember what I thought of theatre but I haven't since September used theatre to change me outside of NSA. I have only used it in understanding the hard work in some movies. Overall I have actually enjoyed theatre class since we were able to have a stress relief sometimes, from classes that constantly required something.

  15. In theatre class this year I learned a lot of new information about theatre and it's history. I liked that we learned about how it began because I feel as though we would be lost with theatre if we didn't know how it began. I think this year has helped me grow from a seed into a tree. This meaning that at first I walked into theatre very close minded but leaving knowing much more than I knew in the beginning. My most memorable moment would be the warm up ooh I feel so good because I gave me energy and made morning more fun to go into theatre with an
open mind. Honestly I don't believe I had and a-ha moment this year. One thing this year has taught me was that in order to portray an emotion or act you have to actually feel the emotion. For example if the role causes you to be depressed you can't walk around all happy jolly, this means that your not playing the role right or being into your emotions. One thing I struggled with was remembering the time periods just because I didn't know what information went where and that was confusing for me.Walking into theatre I didn't really take it seriously and as a joke but now I understand how theatre is essential. Lastly my least favorite part of this year was having to write the plays. I didn't like them just because it was right around the same time as the personal projects and that was just too much and stressful.

  16. In theatre class, I've learned a lot of about theatre and its history from all over the world. I've learned theatre ranging from Early Theatre to how Shakespeare has impacted the world. As a result of theatre class, I've become more confident with public speaking. Different exercises and public speaking activities have made me more confident which positively impacts me in all of my classes. My interactions with my classmates have made me more confident. My most memorable moment of learning when we've done class works ordering different periods of theatre, This has stayed in my mind because I know this was a topic that I struggled on and the constant review has made me confident. An a-ha moment was when I realized that theatre is not that hard to remember. We just have to categorize events based on what we've learned in history class. Class has impacted because It has given me public speaking skills that not all high schoolers have developed. I think that we should elaborate more on categorizing which events went on which category because I know that many students struggle with this. In the beginning, I didn't really care about theatre and thought it was irrelevant. In the end, I realized that this class, has helped me bond with students and further understand what was being learned in English and history class. I think that for you to be a new teacher at North Star, you've done a good job. I know that new teachers to do often feel comfortable or often don't teach to their best ability. But I know that I always enjoyed your class from beginning to end.

  17. i feel like i have learned a lot about theater history and how theater has changed over the years. i have a lot more knowledge about important figures like Shakespeare and Aristotle. As a result of this class i have learned to better work along side other people. I now actively try to make the best out of every group i am put on so that that we can all succeed. my most memorable moment of learning was the group project to review the different time periods of theater history to the rest of the class. through this project we were able to relearn a lot of information that had been lost and we relearned in very creative ways. i'm not entirely sure what qualifies as an "a-ha" moment but i think that a very inspiring moment was the directing project. doing this project inspired me to think about taking on acting outside of class because of how interesting it was to come together as a team. outside of north star i am always trying to analyze the G.O.T.E. of random strangers. thanks to theater i am excited to try being a different type of person than i normally am everyday. my least favorite part of class was probably the 5 day period when there were no warm ups. my class is very talkative and without a warm out o release that energy it is extreme difficult to get things done. during that time it was really hard to get things done because all people wanted to do was talk. i think that for next year the theater history unit should be extended. it contains a lot of information a that gets confused very easily and without more time to get everything packed down tight it is all very easily forgotten. in September i did not like the class and i thought it would of been better used as a study hall period. now i think that theater really helps people to really learn teamwork and communication skills. theater class has made me a more open person and a more helpful teammate.

  18. 1) From theatre class I have learned how to become a character. Before theatre class, anytime I acted I would try to be the character while maintaining myself. Theatre class has taught me to let go and completely transform myself into the character and role I've been given.
    2) I have become a better reader and watcher of plays. Whenever I read a play or watched one, all I was able to see is the basic plot of the play. Because of theatre class, I learned to look deeeper. Now I see how the dramatic structure fits into the play and the stakes of the protaginist affects his/her decisions.
    3) The most memorable moment of theatre class this year was when my group presented our poem in the beginning of the year. This was because it was one of the first times I was able to implement the techniques that I learned in class.
    4) An ah-ha moment for me was the warm-ups. Sometimes I would enter class without energy and lack of focus. The warm-ups we did in the beginning off class gave me that energy and put me on task.
    5) Theatre class has changed my perspective of the world because I noticw more things about the things happening around. I now see most things as a potential plot for a play.
    6) My least favorite part of theatre class has been the Theatre History Unit. This is because it made class feel like any other class. Causing class to be dry.
    7) I would siggest increasing the time spent on the directing project. This would allow students to understand better the playwriting project.
    8) My opinion of this class changed at the beginning of the year I did not understand why we had to take the class because it won't be important in our everyday lives. Now I see how wrong I was because every where I look I see something I learned in theatre.
    9) I am looking forwatd to Theatre Arts II. This is because this years theatre class was a good experience for me and I am looking forward to increasing my knowledge of theatre.

  19. Over the course of my tenth grade theater year, I feel like I learned where theater originated from and how it moved forward in history. Over the course of the year, I feel as though I have grown with my expression. I know give my expression and attitude when I say things. My most rememberable moment I had in class was doing the machine. This is because it was like one big party, and it got everyone involved. One "A-Ha" moment I had in class was learning the different phases of theater and how it changed over time. This class affects the way I see the world now because I now realize that everything is connected to theater in some sort of way. My least favorite party of class was having the Greece and Rome lecture because the information was the same so I got some of it mix up. One unit I think should be elaborated on is theater history because you learn a lot of information in a short period I time and is expect to remember all of it. The difference in my view now is in September I seen this class as a waste of time, but I now see how it will affect our lives in the future. Towards the end of the school you, I like how we were able to pick out own warm up because it got everyone involved and wanted to participate.

  20. This past school year in Theatre class I feel that I have learned what working together in an ensemble can accomplish. I learned how to work better with others and a lot of time management skills. This was done by working on the acting and directing project. It gave me a chance to work with my peers and set up times that we would work together. I feel that this task could help me in the real world. Through theatre class I feel that my ability to work with others and out side of my comfort zone has really expanded. Theatre class helped me work out these issues. My least favorite part of theatre class would have to be remembering to write the journals. Overall I would have to say that the theatre program is very beneficial for students especially the new incoming freshman.

  21. In North Star, we are taught many things, but using a strong voice was always important. This year I learned the true importance of strong voice. When you have a strong voice, you are taken more serious. As a result of theater class, I’ve learned a lot about theater and how we use it in everyday life. My most memorable moment was when I met Mr. Peterson. You are a strong teacher and a teacher with a lot of will because your patience to teacher grew and I saw you get angry, but you didn’t express it. An “a-ah” moment was when I distinguished Greek and Rome theaters because I couldn’t get it for anything. I see that mostly every stage you see was from an ancient civilization. Even when you go to the movie theater, I see an ancient civilization’s stage. Sometimes my peers got a little distracted by each other, and I feel they took advantage of your niceness. The fact that there are no desks makes it hard to write for me. Playwriting was fun, but I believe I could have done better. Because we didn’t have anything to write about specifically my imagination went wild and for me that’s a bad thing. Originally, I thought it was a waste of time, but as I have stated before I learned how to project to a large audience. Theater was a fun class and I know as the years grow I will love it more.

  22. Honestly, before this class, I thought Theater was all about memorizing lines and saying them out on stage. However, what I have learned in Theater class completely changed my perspective. I learned that There are many forms of Theater that can be applied to many people all over the world.Just like how mimes who use expressive gestures to portray an abstract feeling can be understood by many different people, Theater can also be a way to show your opinions to the world in which many would be able to understand. It is also amazing how ancient Theater is. Starting from early Theater with story telling and rituals, then on to Ancient Greece with the City Dionysia festival in order to honor their god Dionysus. This thought me that Theater helped with community building. It still is a uniting force all around the world. Aristotle came up with dramatic structure that is now used in almost all forms of art not just Theater. At first I thought Theater was just for outgoing people who are naturals at being creative and working with others therefore I thought Theater was not for me. However, this is not true. There are many aspects of Theater that does not involve being an actor. You can be a playwright, a costumes director, a music director or you can work behind the scenes and help advertise. It is all part of the Theater experience. My favorite part of class are the warm ups or when we are put into groups and we have to create a scene to act out. At first I didn't think I had the skills to perform, but these activities helped to build up my skills. For example G.O.T.E. helped me develop my characters and analyze other characters. The least favorite part of class was when we had to learn tedious terms and vocabulary; however, the knowledge is worth having. I really liked the play-writing unit and i think it should be extended and elaborated. this can be done by shortening or eliminating the unit where we were put in groups and had to memorize as well as perform a play. Instead, we can have certain people write the plays and have the remaining students memorize and act out the plays. I feel that students were not satisfied with stage readings alone, thy wanted to bring the plays to life. We were more engaged in each other's plays than a random play they had to perform.an ah-ah moment from class would have to be when when we were reading Deonte's play and the climax came. Everyone was both shocked and excited. My feelings towards Theater Arts II is that it is an eyeopener into a different world not much different from the world around us.

  23. In my first year of theatre class, I have learned tons of history about theatre. My favorite time period was Early Theatre. Early Theatre was my favorite mainly due the story about the lion and Ook. It was great to know where everything started. Because of Theatre class, my confidence of speaking in front of people has grown. I also use my 6 P's more in my everyday life. The most memorable moment in class was performing plays in front of our class before winter break. This was my first time having to perform a play that I worked by myself to do. My “a-ha” moment in theatre class was hearing my peer’s plays in class. The director’s project helped me learn about my peers. The director’s project helped me understand where some of my most favorite movies come from. A lot of the history has come up in my everyday life. My least favorite part of theatre was my personal director’s project. What I wanted out of my play is not what was written. I wish I took advantage of the time we were given to do it so that I can perfect my project. The Theatre History unit should be extended and placed first because there was a lot of important information that we had to rush through. I thought Theatre II would be more eventful with more acting. I didn’t know that there was much to learn about theatre. I look forward to next year because I like theatre class and I’ve learned so much throughout the year.

  24. 1. This year in theatre class, I have learned that theatre is not as easy as I thought it would be. I didn't think it would be so much work because it was a theatre class. Little did I know, theatre provides as much rigor and as many projects as any other class would.
    2. I think I have grown because I now know not to take this class lightly. I have learned to take it as a regular course and no to sleep on it. Theatre has taught me to star on top of my work, especially projects.
    3. My most memorable moment of learning in this class would be the playwriting unit because I didn't think there were as many rules as there were. Also, the acting and directing process. memorizing lines aren't easy and it was good for me to have experienced it.
    4. An "a-ha!" moment from class was most definitely during the Theatre History unit. I had no idea that theatre was packed with so much fruitful history and information. It has as much information as does a regular history course.
    5. Theatre class has taught me that inspiration can come from anywhere (literally anywhere!) It can come from a moment at a bar or at the park even. It has taught me that inspiration to write a play can come from anywhere.
    6. My least favorite part of class was when we didn't have warm-ups for that day. This was a debacle because the warm-up got the class pumped and full of energy. When we didn't have them, it felt like the class was drained the whole period.
    7. I think the Playwriting unit should be extended because it takes a lot of work to go into an entire play and you would get better results if you gave the students more time to think and prepare their ideas about what they want their play to entail.
    8. I fell that now, I definitely understand theatre better. When we started school in August, I didn't take the course seriously and now, I definitely see where the rigor comes in.
    9. Overall, my learning this year in your class, Mr. Peterson was interesting. Not only because you yourself are a character but because you brought excitement to every class we've had this year while managing to teach us at the same time.

  25. #9 To conclude , my learning experience has been great . I enjoyed the class and my peers and you made it even more fun. I can't wait to take theater next year. It feels as though the year has gone by so quickly , I wish we had more time to learn more things

  27. Reflecting on my Sophomore year theatre class, I realize that my mind has expanded by the accumulated intake of theatre knowledge. Starting with early theatre, learning that theatre originated from story telling tribes in ancient Africa, centuries ago, sparked my interest in learning more about theatre history. Next it was Ancient Greek and Roman theatre. Learning that Thespis was the first actor inspired me. The bravery it took to actually step out of the chorus was amazing to me. Little did he know his great move, changed theatre history. This people like Sophocles, Aristophanes, Escilus, etc introduced more actors onto the stage, critiqued plays, and further improved theatre. Also, the stage set-up, scenery, and back stage usage were all foundations of staging today. Next Medival theatre pushed theatre even more. The christian church decided to tell more universal stories, specifically from the Bible, to gain more followers. Morality and Passion plays all were very meaningful. Introducing the pageant wagon allow plays to be seen by all people, no matter where you were located. Moving on to Elizabethan theatre, Shakespeare challenged my mind. His unique writing and universal messages made me appreciate his existence. The different types of theatres in England during this time were manifestations of people's love for the arts. This love was so strong at performances, some people stood up so close to the stage of the actors that they interacted with them. French Neo Classical theatre made me aware about Christopher Marlow, one of the greatest playwrights of his time. The greatest? Well, he clearly had some intense drive that made him strive for excellence in the theatre world. Finally, comedia de'l arte. This type of theatre in Italy was very unique to me. The peculiar stock characters did not really teach moral lessons but they provided comedic therapy. The subtle funny movements they portrayed on stage greatly entertained the audience. This is the whole purpose of theatre: to bring in your audience. There is much I can elaborate on about theatre history but the opportunity to be a playwright, finally, allowed me to exhibit my knowledge on playwrighting and play structure. Being able to create such a play made me proud that I even took this theatre class. I never knew I had a theatre talent in me. Playwrighting is not what I expected to excel in. I am so appreciative of a teacher like Mr. Peterson because your hard work, determination to teach us, and motivation is unparalleled. Due to this, I soaked up much theatre knowledge and even demonstrated some of my interest in the Spring Musical. I felt it during this performance, and this was my most memorable moment. I asked myself who my character was, what they wanted, and how they were willing to get it. I used tone, punch, pitch, etc in my voice to tell the story as an ensemble member. I can go on and on about how I've applied my theatre knowledge but overall I have become more confident in the type of person I am. However, in this class, I disliked lectures. Power point presentations were more involving of the class and painted more permanent images in our minds. Early theatre did not have many visuals and that should have been elaborated on so that students can remember it much better.
Overall, I am pleased with how far I have come in my theatre knowledge which does not differ from the beginning of the year. My eagerness still survives.

  28. Overall this year I believe that I have grown a lot over the corse of this year. Surprisingly this years theatre's class was a struggle for me. Something that I really struggled with was journals and getting work done on time because having this class was something totally new for me. But looking back on the year I can say that the most memorable moment was the acting and directing unit. It was really fun and interesting to see all the hard work come together after we had worked so hard. A sort of "ah-ha" moment that I had this year was maybe quater 3. I realized that theatre was not going to be as easy as I had thought. We were forced to learn a lot of content in juat a small amont of time . I know many of my peers did struggle with this as well. But i do believe that i have learned quite a lot from theatre class this year. Thearte, wether your part is to act, direct, design or ect. you do have a very diffincult job. All the hardwork that is put into the rehersal and planning process really does come together on opening night. Also, something that i struggled with this year was keeping my grade up. Coming into this class i had no idea that it would be as difficult, for me, as it was, which was very surprising. My least favorite part of the class would have to be the blog system. I personally could never keep up with them which was really a bummer. And i know for sure that it was a new experience for myself as well as some of my fellow peers. When i entered the class in September i had no idea all the new things i would be learning. I thought this class would just fly by, similar to our music class year, but boy was i wrong. This class really challenged me wether it was to sing at Sweeny Todd auditions or to get my assigmnants in on time. Now i believe that i have a lot more respect for theatre not just as an art. Lastly, if i could make any adjustments to the class i would move theater history to first quater so students will have the oppertuntity to get that chunk of work out the way. Also, if there would be any way to make the blog system more flexible? That would be great..

  29. over the course of the year i feel as though i learned how to be a better actor in some aspects. Even though i know acting is not something i like to do i sill saw a growth from the beginning of the year until now. I feel as though I've successfully learned how to get in and out of character. Before coming into theater I didn't really find acting to be interesting. Bit , it was fun being able to place myself in different scenes and become someone different . I've also learned how to write a play. My most memorable moment of the whole year was when we had to do the directing and acting we did in the 2nd Quarter. This moment was fun because it was basically like out first acting of the year. This was something we have grown since then and if we did it now we would have done a much better job. The Most A-ah moment is when i was the director of my own play. this really gave me that moment because being a director gives you power of how you want your play to be told and who you wanted your characters to be. Directing is something that is interesting because it gives you the power to complete your play and how you want it to look in the end. My least favorite part was the student re-teach because not everyone took it seriously. In order to help the students, I think that separating some of the topics in empires theater will help incoming sophomores to comprehend and learn more about the history. In September , I thought that theater was useless and I wouldn't really learn anything. But now , i have a different point of view now. And i have no other comments of the year except, thank you for teaching me theater!

  30. I feel I have learned this year in theatre class how to write and perform various characters using strategies like G.O.T.E that allow actors and playwrights to better understand human emotion. As a result of this class I feel I have grown more aware of the work it takes preparing for a role. My most memorable moment of learning in class was when students preformed monologues that taught us to express a character's decision. I would say was an "a-ha" moment from class was the playwriting lesson. I learned to include the 6 elements of playwriting into my play. This class affected the way I see the world outside the doors of NSA by allowing me to see the boundaries of human emotion and reaction to the circumstances humans are brought under. My least favorite part of class was theatre history, there is a lot of information to keep track of. I would suggest to extend theatre history for next years class. There is no difference between how I viewed this class when I first started in September versus how I feel about it now. I loved theatre all this year! I liked learning Theatre Arts II because Mr. Peterson and the class never made lessons boring!

  31. I feel that through my journey in theatre class I have learned alot. I have learned the way to write a play and also what I need to write a play. For instance G.O.T.E. Which shows me that I must have a goal for my writing. I also learned different eras of theatre. Like commedia del arte and many more.I believe that i have progressed through my acting skills and public speaking skills. I have learned how to use gestures as well as strong voice. The most memorable moment in this class was when we listened to the plays written by our classmates. I feel that was very interesting to listen to other people's ideas and how they wrote. This class has made me view the world in a more vigilant way. I am able to view things more like a director views his play in action.I feel as though the group reviews were not as helpful and review wasnt getting done.

  32. I feel as though that I have learned a great deal in this class. I have also learned that my lineage which is Greece, is responsible for a lot of the theatre elements and the kick off to a lot of theatre history's elements. I feel I have grown as a person as a person in this area specifically in acting and experience. My personality has not changed...although it needs to be improved. However, I have learned a lot of back round and improve skills that can help me in presentation and goal. My most memorable moment in class was I believe every class I had this year. I thought that all that they would make us do in theatre is team build and improvise a scene the whole year. No it was something more. It made me find out a lot about myself that I didn't even know. I thank Mr. Peterson most of all for that. The A-ha moment sort of came when I was writing my play. The play was very much relatable and I had to look inside myself in order to do that in the deep places. The affect of the class has led me to look at the deeper meaning in things and its expression. My least favorite part of class was nothing really I did in fact enjoy the course. A unit that could be elaborated on is Greece and Rome because the two were made very similar but a separation can be made between the two. Id liked to learn a lot more on the emotional peace of theatre were it actually comes from. This year it seems as if we only scratched the surface of it.

  33. Through the year, I have learned theatre history, characters and directors of theatres, how to be an actor , and how to playwright. Learning the things mentioned above have contributed to my success in Theatre Arts II. I feel that I have grown a great deal due to the fact the class has taught me a lot. It has expanded my knowledge of even the most basic things into a deeper analysis of them.My most memorable memory of learning in the class was the re-teach. I was taught all the different periods of theatre history and all the significance in each period. My "a-ha" moment was when I realized the impact that Thespis had on Theatre as a whole. He was the first actor to step out of the choir. This class has really opened my eyes. I might even consider being in some of the school musicals or being an actor outside of school. The class has allowed me to use my personality to interact with people as well.To be honest, there was not a least favorite part of class. Everything we did was beneficial to our education and I enhanced each piece of information the same way.I would just suggest that you expand the reteach period so that people will be able to gather all of the correct information and pass it on to their peers.I feel that this class is not an elective. In September, I thought it was an elective but I feel like it is mandatory in our life and in our schedule.2012-2013 was an amazing year.
